ASCL Policy Statement

The programme of courses run by Snowsport England and hosted by Interski are heavily subsidised. Our motives are twofold. Firstly, we contribute to the growing pool of qualified party leaders by widening the accessibility of the ASCL training, which we see as beneficial to school/college snowsport participation in general. Secondly, it enables us to showcase our operation to existing, new and aspiring party leaders, not as a 'hard sell', but simply by enabling our activities to be witnessed at first-hand.

In order to safeguard the value of this initiative and to ensure that participants are suitably prepared and adequately skilled, we insist that they meet with the course requirements and ability levels, as stated by Snowsport England. You should ideally have skied for at least 6 weeks, in 3 different complex ski resorts outside the UK. It is strongly recommended that candidates have participated as a leader or assistant leader in a number of off-site group visits. Candidates must be fit enough to ski for more than 6 hours on each day of the course in varied snow conditions and wearing a light rucksack. Candidates should be able to ski continuously and rhythmically linked predominantly parallel turns demonstrating appropriate balance and effective use of the skis in varying conditions and situations. It is unlikely that this standard will have been reached in less than 6 weeks skiing with coaching/instruction. By the end of the course, candidates will be expected to ski as above whilst leading the group.

Any candidate who cannot ski well enough, or who is insufficiently fit to move safely or comfortably around the mountain may be asked to leave the course and be recommended to the local ski school for lessons at their own expense or invited to return home immediately at personal expense without refund, depending on the circumstances. If you are in any doubt whatsoever about your individual level of skiing ability, please seek further advice from Snowsport England to avoid (1) wasting the opportunity and (2) denying the opportunity to another candidate.
